A wet riser system maintained by Durcan’s was put to use when 12 fire engines and around 80
firefighters tackled a fire tearing through a flat on Hindmarsh Close in Shadwell, East London.
Thanks to the quick response from London Fire Brigade and the speed of getting water from the
constantly charged wet riser system there were no injuries and damage was limited to a single 14th-floor flat of the 24-storey block of flats.
This is another example of lives and family homes that have been saved by essential fire safety

This week we have been out carrying out the first service for AOV systems in Watford and were
shocked with the major non-conformances identified. Many of these systems are reletively new (1-3yrs old) and this is our first visit to inspect.
Non-conformant items include:
-All systems have been installed using the wrong cable so need a complete rewire
- Many systems have used motors not designed for smoke ventilation
- Undersized free vent area
- Incorrect fuse spurs
- Missing smoke detection
- Missing firemans override controls adjacent the vent to allow the vent to be closed without the
risk of trapping fingers
- incorrect size batteries
- non certified AOV panel (not achieved EN12101-10 certification)
- cables not secured correctly to the building utilising metal fixings.
This large list of issues highlights the importance of ensuring the contractor you chose to work
with can demonstrate their knowledge and compliance with the requirements of BS EN 12101 and BS 9999.
